We continue to stay busy at preschool! While we are still learning classroom routines and expectations, the kids are catching on quickly! I appreciate that they show up everyday and have that zest and eagerness to learn and be with their friends. We continue to work on our finger strength by working in our journals and doing activities like the one below, where we needed to use tongs to put the correct colored pom-pom in the tray.

During small groups this week we have had children work on classification, which is the skill of sorting or grouping items by similar characteristics, such as colors, shapes or sizes. In one activity children were able to sort buttons by color or shape. In another activity children were able to work on identifying numbers and letters. We work on simple math throughout the day in preschool. We count to 20 when washing our hands, we have children help set the tables for snacks (counting out napkins, placemats, and cups), we count our friends when we come in from the playground and numerous others tasks that require counting.

We have been very busy at preschool this week. We are working on further developing our fine motor and handwriting skills by writing in journals, forming letters with Wiki Stix and coloring in our Emergent Readers book which is about buttons. Handwriting skills help children develop reading and spelling skills. Handwriting also helps with the ability to recall and remember information.
