HAL

In July, the Board adopted a new high ability learner (HAL) policy. Feedback was taken from the teachers, data was evaluated and a committee met to determine a best-fit starting point in the updated policy. Now, there are multiple pathways to demonstrate high ability learner status and they are follows:

One (1) primary source

  • Standardized achievement tests (i.e. NWEA-MAP; NWEA-MPG)

  • Individual ability test (i.e. IQ test)

OR

Two (2) or more of the following secondary sources:

  • State Accountability tests (i.e. NSCAS-R, NSCAS-M)

  • Scholastic aptitude measures (i.e. PSAT; SAT; ACT)

  • Previous and present school achievement records

  • Teacher matrix

  • Self-nomination form

MAP Pathway

Beginning in the 3rd grade, students scoring in the 91st or above percentile will be identified as HAL. Students may enter the program at any point.

Students remain in the program until requalification in their 6th and 9th grade year.

Individual Test

The school psychologist can administer the WISC test. Those receiving 115 would qualify as HAL students.

State Accountability Tests

Deshler administers the NSCAS fall and spring. Those with a score at or above the 91st percentile qualify for HAL services.

Scholastic Aptitude

Those with the following scores qualify for HAL at Deshler Public Schools

  • PreAct: 28 in one area

  • ACT: 30 in one area
